01 - Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
02 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a clean surface. Top each with two cheese slices. Cover with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
03 - Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
04 - Add sandwiches to the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula until golden brown and cheese is melted.
05 - Remove from heat and let rest for 1 minute. Cut in halves or quarters and serve immediately.
